A Guide to Canvas’s New AI-Powered Tools

As we continue to navigate the evolving landscape of educational technology, I wanted to share some exciting news about AI-powered tools now accessible within Canvas. These innovative technologies are designed to streamline course development and administrative tasks in Canvas and give you more time for teaching and making connections with your students.

During A and B-Term 2025, these tools will only be made available in our AI and Experiential Learning Canvas group. To get access to them, please fill out our form.

New Canvas AI Tools

Smart Search (AI Nutrition Facts)

Leveraging semantic algorithms and AI, Smart Search allows users to search Canvas course content by understanding the context of queries and finding relevant results based on that context. Smart Search facilitates faster content discovery for both teachers and students.

Discussion Summaries (AI Nutrition Facts)

In Discussion Summaries, discussion threads have a “Summarize” button that will use generative AI to generate a summary of key points and questions in the thread. Once generated, summaries may be refined by passing a description of desired outputs (e.g. “concerns about grading policy”), or be regenerated. These summaries are only available to instructors and administrators.

Canvas Inbox & Course AI Translation (AI Nutrition Facts)

Communication in multilingual classrooms has become easier with AI-supported translations in Canvas. This new feature allows users to translate text in Discussions, Announcements, and Inbox messages into over 100 languages. To illustrate, instructors can post announcements in English, while non-native speakers can easily translate them to ensure understanding. This feature breaks down language barriers and creates a more inclusive learning environment.

Canvas AI Marketplace

The Emerging AI Marketplace aims to connect educators and administrators to new, cutting-edge artificial intelligence products and services that work seamlessly within Canvas. All partners have pledged to adhere to Instructure’s approach to AI.

Coming soon!

More announcements are certain to come as AI continues to evolve rapidly, and Instructure is prepared to bring these tools to education.

If you have any questions about these or other upcoming Canvas tools, please reach out to us at atc-ttl@wpi.edu.
