Open Streets Cape Town

Open Streets Cape Town (OSCT) is a nonprofit organization that works to create a car-free space where residents can celebrate the public space that is lost due to urbanization. OSCT and its volunteers close the roads to hold Open Streets Days where communities can play and mingle in streets. To build a volunteer program, it is essential to gain an understanding of volunteer motivations and effective ways to recruit, train, and retain volunteers. For this project, we examined volunteerism in Cape Town, assessed OSTC’s volunteer program, and researched the programs of other Cape Town organizations. From this research, we developed two informational documents: a social media handbook and a volunteer program handbook. These handbooks serve as guides for Open Streets and similar organizations.
