Abstract

The research team worked alongside the Center for Early Childhood Development (CECD) and created a social media campaign to raise awareness for early childhood development (ECD) in South Africa. The campaign’s primary objective was to bridge the gap in general knowledge between ECD organizations and the general public. To understand the ECD sector and general awareness throughout the country, the team surveyed with a large participant pool, and conducted numerous interviews with parents and educators of Cape Town. After data collection, the team transcribed the interviews and surveys, creating parallels and themes which they transformed into media, including short videos, infographics, and statistics. Upon completion of the study it was evident that different outreach strategies are needed to break the barriers of poverty, geography, and education. The research team recognized that the social media presence of the CECD was in much higher standing than anticipated, and further collaboration with them on different programs would be more effective for outreach.
