Abstract

On behalf of the National Science Foundation, we assessed the effectiveness of a relatively new pedagogy: Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs). A meta-analysis of 41 published reports, additional archival research, and semi-structured interviews identified multiple benefits of CUREs, including their introducing more students to research. We also used the published reports to assess outcomes of CUREs and identify obstacles to their successful implementation. We recommended a set of features that the most successful CUREs should incorporate.
