MQP, Job Search, and even more on LinkedIn.
Let me start off by talking about the LinkedIn Workshop. At first I was a little iffy about going but I am so glad I went – I really feel like I learned a lot. Before my extent of using LinkedIn was basically just to update my profile and then connect with a few people I already knew. However, I know relize how powerful a tool LinkedIn can be in Networking. Here are a few of the facts that I took away.
- Make sure you keep connecting with people you know on LinkedIn, but remember that a quality is better than quantity.
- If you join groups you can contact active members who may have good advice.
- If you search for a particular company, you can see if any employees come up in your 2nd network and you can ask your mutual contact to introduce you. (Sometimes you’ll realize you have a contact that you already know or you’ll realize that you know someone who know’s someone who can help you.)
- While looking for a particular company you can also see people entering the company, leaving the company, and being promoted. It could give you clues into potential job openings.
- You can actually search for jobs via LinkedIn. Both within a company and in general.
- Unless you’re applying for a particular job posting, don’t straight out just ask for a job. Make a connection. Strike up a conversation or ask for some advice. Builidning a relationship is more important and could be helpful in the future.
Okay, so now the Job Search. I’ve been applying to a few companies but I can’t get the thought out of my head about the company I interviewed with recently. I’m supposidly hearing next week if I’m going tohave a job or not. Yikes! Hopefully they email me Monday morning at 8am. It would be such a relief to get an offer this week. It’s a program that I’m actually genuinely itnerested in so fingers crossed.
And MQP..ugh. I don’t even know what else to say. We have so much to do and so little time. And I’m not sure my MQP partners are feeling the same anxiety that I am…which is making me even more anxious. After this weekend we have 3 weeks left. With no paper, no prototype, and I’m not convinced we don’t have all the details ironed out. And everytime we ask someone to help us with something manufacturing-wise they seem to help a little bit and then tell us to come back in 2 or 3 days. And that’s been happing for 2 weeks. Blah. Even talking about this is making me anxious. Wish me luck that this all turns out okay. :/
