Boston Environment Department

The mission of the Boston Environment Department is to enhance the quality of life in Boston by protecting air, water, climate and land resources, and by preserving and improving the integrity of Boston’s architectural and historic resources. The department maintains Boston’s wealth of historic sites, buildings, landscapes, and waterways through protective designation and review processes.

The department is focused on implementing the Mayor’s commitment to sustainable development, climate protection, and the environment by reviewing environmental impact assessments, issuing permits and providing information and referral services on environmental issues.

Through participation in various local, state, and federal review processes, the department seeks to increase the accessibility and quality of Boston’s water and riverfronts. The department provides improved access to energy efficiency services for both residents and businesses.
