Profiling Community Assets

Assets TeamThe 2010 Assets team worked in collaboration with the Violence Protection through Urban Upgrading programme of the city of Cape Town and Monwabisi Park community members to create an asset-based monitoring and evaluation tool for the informal settlements in Cape Town, South Africa. The final product of our work was the Monwabisi Park 2010 Profile of Assets book, a compilation of information gathered through interviews about various assets of the community. These assets are positive aspects, which strengthen or help the people of the community. Given the seven week time constraint, our group profiled churches, youth groups, shops, crèches, a community hall, and the weekend patrol group in Monwabisi Park, as an example of how assets would be identified and profiled. This book is intended to be used by the VPUU in their monitoring and evaluation process to assess redevelopment efforts and strengthen these community assets, with the hope that VPUU Community Facilitators and community members will work to continue the compilation of a full Profile of Assets including all the assets of Monwabisi Park, and carry on the use of this type of monitoring and evaluation to other communities as well.
