The Relationship between Education and Career Development

Education has not only a connection to sanitation and hygiene elements in informal settlements, but also to general career development. More consistent and extended education leads to more job opportunities, increased income, and the ability to change one’s economic status. Within informal settlements, that education could mean finding permanent housing, securing a stable job, and breaking the cycle of poverty. Caretaker training, specifically in Langrug, must incorporate and differentiate lessons based on education and skill level of the caretakers in WaSH concepts to make these programmes the most successful and sustainable. The opportunity not only exists to improve the livelihoods of community members through sanitation techniques, but also by providing a system that fosters education advancement and career development.
