Langrug

Langrug

Langrug, home to more than 4,700 residents, is an informal settlement that lies in the Franschhoek valley. It is nestled between beautiful mountains in the Cape Winelands. Since 2000, Langrug forms part of the Municipality of Stellenbosch. Langrug is divided into 3 regions known as Nkanini, Mandela Park, and Zwelitsha. One third of the population currently has no access to water supply, toilets, or electricity. Langrug is unique for its partnership with the Municipality, NGOs, and WPI. Zwelitsha

Zwelitsha sits on the slope of the mountain, the northernmost section of Langrug. Zwelitsha is home to approximately 600 people that have no electricity, sewer system, and one ongoing tap. In an attempt to meet their needs, the Municipality of Stellenbosch implemented chemical toilets on two concrete slabs in Zwelitsha. Zwelitsha residents soon rejected the chemical toilets because they were not well-maintained and produced bad odours. Zwelitsha residents currently have no choice but to use the bush or the nearest toilet facility in E Block, which is in Nkanini. Pictured below is a polluted dam in Zwelitsha.
