Our Partners

Our project involved some criteria that is beyond the knowledge of undergraduate students.  Therefore, we sought outside sources to help us with designs and proposals using their overall experience in the subject matter.  These partners also helped guide our project to the final product.  We highly appreciate their involvement and their interest in our project.  Without them, our achievements could not have been possible.  Our partners are listed and described below.

CT09Plan vpuuOur official project sponsor was the Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading Programme (VPUU) with Michael Krause as the liaison.  The VPUU works in settlements throughout Khayelitsha, South Africa.  Just as the name implies, the VPUU seeks to combat violence in Khayelitsha through promotion of improving of the urban environment.  As a team, we met with Michael Krause and our professors once a week to discuss our ideas, our goals, and our accomplishments.  Michael proved to be a very reliable and informative source.  In addition, Chris Berens who also works for the VPUU, used his skills with computer programs to help us get started with Geographic Information System (GIS) and print scaled maps of Monwabisi Park.

Dr. Kevin Winter and student Taryn Debeer from the University of Cape Town (UCT) held several meetings with our group to familiarize us with GIS.  Dr. Kevin Winter is a professor of environmental studies and geography at the UCT.  Together, he and Taryn carried out GIS exercises with us which became very helpful when making maps throughout our project.

Peter Inglis

Peter Inglis is a professional engineer and co-owner of Haw and Inglis Contractors.  With his engineering background and resources, he was able to help us design a plan for a practical sidewalk.  He also contributed ideas for the design of roads and housing layouts.
