Rainwater Collection

Rain water collection

Many of the past WPI groups have used rainwater as a resource for different water and sanitation designs. The 2007 project group built a communal laundry station in Monwabisi with practically zero waste. Rainwater was collected in large 1500 litre storage tanks and fed through piping to the laundry basin (Alen 2007). The 2008 team also incorporated rainwater collection tanks in their design as the main water supply for the laundry and hand-washing stations in their facility (Granfone 2008). Rainwater is a resource that is readily available so collecting and using rainwater will save water and will also reduce the amount of rainwater in the streets. Rainwater collection is something that we hope to include in the final WaSH facility design.
