Safe Stove Implementation

Safe Stove Implementation

The Arivi Safe Paraffin Stove

We had several telephone and email discussions with Anya Calantzis, a representative from Arivi, about the implementation of the Arivi Safe Paraffin Stove in Monwabisi Park.  She explained to us that although the company isn’t planning for the stove to be on the market until about October of 2010, they are looking for a small, densely-populated location to bring stoves to test.  Anya expressed to us that she believed that Monwabisi Park would be a great place to bring the stoves, and was wondering if there was a way for a municipality to subsidize the cost of the stoves.  Our sponsors, from the City of Cape Town’s Environmental Resource Management department, were also interested in the Arivi Stove, so we put Cindy Jacobs, one of our sponsors, in contact with Anya.  We plan to keep contact with Anya throughout the year in order to maintain the relationship with the company until the 2010 WPI Energy Team can move forward with our work.

The ParaSafe Stove

We also contacted the ParaSafe Stove company to ask how their stoves could be implemented in Monwabisi Park.  We learned that although the stoves are already on the market, the vender of the stoves would determine the price.  They wanted to support the business within the informal settlements by selling their stoves for R90 (if an order of forty-eight or more was made) to a local store owner.  They do sell to larger distribution chains, such as ShopRite, but for a much higher price of R200.
