Resources

Over the course of a seven week preparatory period, and eight weeks in Cape Town, South Africa, our team researched, developed, and compiled a series of useful documents to inform future projects and promote the sustainability of our efforts.

Executive Summary for WPI Team [pdf, 2.73mb]

After eight weeks in Cape Town, our team developed an Executive Summary that describes our accounts, progress, challenges, and project outcomes. It provides insight on the important details of the project.

Proposal for Foundation for Community Work (FCW) (Available to members of the CTPC community)

Our sponsor FCW requested a proposal that discussed two alternative models for expanding Early Childhood Development (ECD) outreach services and resources within disadvantaged communities. The goal of this proposal was to describe the model of utilising a public space to host programmes/workshops and the model of using a shipping container as an ECD Resource Hub for ECD materials and toys. In the proposal, the models are explained and benefits and obstacles of using each model are discussed. FCW is using this proposal internally as a reference and externally for applying for funding from local government, organisations, and sponsor agencies.

Flyer for ECD Programmes [pdf, 230kb]

To promote the use of the stadium for ECD programmes, we created a flyer to be put up and handed out to people in the settlement. The flyer reflected suggestions made by our co-researchers and was developed in collaboration with FCW. The main highlights of the flyer are the ECD focus, time, date, and incentive in the form of snacks. The flyers were distributed by our co-researchers and other residents of the community by being passed out, hung up, and given to the informal crèche within the settlement.

Shipping Container Computer Aided Design Model: ECD Resource Hub

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) model was created to show the layout of the inside of the shipping container that will be used as an ECD Resource Hub (Model 2 of our alternative ECD strategies). The shipping container is 6 meters by 2 meters and contains two windows, a steel door, basic electricity setup, and shelves holding boxes of ECD materials and other items.

Inventory Log for ECD Resource Hub [pdf, 221kb]

In order to maintain and log all of the materials and toys within the ECD Resource Hub, an inventory checklist was made in which the status and condition of the resources can be documented. An FCW employee will complete an inventory check using these documents once a month.

ECD Material Sign-out Sheet for Families [pdf, 200kb]

The ECD Resource Hub is meant to be used by the surrounding community(ies), who are allowed to check out items on certain days of the week and return them within 3-4 days. The sign-out sheet ensures that every item is accounted for during these borrowing periods.

ECD Material Sign-out Sheet for ECD Centres [pdf, 201kb]

The ECD Resource Hub is also meant to be used by ECD centres that have limited supplies. They can log out the resources in the hub on certain days of the week for a specified borrowing period. This sheet will allow them to check items out to help aid their teaching.

Branding for ECD Resource Hub

The shipping container is branded with a design to describe its purpose and sponsor(s). It is important to clearly state that it is for ECD purposes and that it be painted with fun, child-friendly colours so it is appealing to the target audiences.
